”Encierro de Toros” Print

$25.00

High-quality art print on stark white textured linen paper. Hand numbered and signed.

11.5” x 16.25” (will look best displayed in a float frame with dark panels)

Originally made with ink, colored pencil, and gouache on Arches cold-pressed watercolor paper

We have done few creatures on this planet a greater cruelty than cattle. Aurochs were wild bovines that stood over 6 feet tall at the shoulder, and are the ancestor to modern stock cows. They were environmental engineers, powerful, and sacred animals. They were driven to extinction by humans.

Currently, we slaughter around 36,000,000 cows each year. They generally live without much regard for their nervous systems or level of cognitive function, which is remarkably high, outperforming dogs in navigation, and demonstrating self-awareness, problem-solving, and complex social structures.

In India, cows are culturally considered sacred by many, adorned with jewelry and fabrics, revered like a holy man.

In America, we tie their genitals tightly to their bodies, climb on top, and see how long we can hang on while the bull tries to free itself. These bulls are actually bred to select traits that actually heighten their sensitivity to unpleasant stimuli so they put on a better show.

There is a practice dating back to the 12th century in Spain in which bulls are released into a crowd of people. In a frenzied panic, they run on instinct, seeking escape.

The run ends with the bulls being stabbed with brightly colored swords until they collapse in a bloody death.

A portion of each sale goes to OnlyAnimals to support efforts against inhumane treatment of these animals.
